2009 Recipient - Brett BurkeyThis year’s Economic Educator of the Year, has been a leader in teaching economics for over 25 years. His passion for teaching economics has never diminished over those 25 years. His principal states that he continuously looks for new strategies, ideas and methods to engage and enlighten his students and provide them with the tools to be successful.
His leadership and dedication to teaching economics extends beyond his classroom and school. He is an in-service instructor for the Florida Council serving Palm Beach and Broward County through the Florida Atlantic University Center, he authored the latest curriculum guidelines in Economics for the Palm Beach County school system, and serves as a lesson plan and curriculum evaluator for the National Council on Economic Education.
He is the founder and creator of the very first on campus student led credit union in Palm Beach County. He embraces technology and in doing so, developed a website that is invaluable to his students. It is used as a research tool during the Stock Market Challenge, a place to post assignments and now has a blog to further students’ conversations about the economy.
EligibilityThe award is based on demonstrated leadership in financial literacy, free enterprise and economic education over a sustained period of time. An evidence of creativity and innovation in teaching these concepts should be clear. Judging Criteria
