For more than 30 years, the Florida Council on Economic Education has been preparing Florida’s young people to make sound, personal financial decisions and to assume productive roles in our free enterprise system. The Council has trained thousands of Florida teachers to teach students from Kindergarten through 12th grade to be financially savvy and to understand the underlying economic principles of personal financial management.The Florida Economic Educator of the Year award was created to recognize an educator, in grades K -12, who is judged to be the most outstanding teacher of financial literacy, free enterprise and economic education in the state.

This year’s Economic Educator of the Year, has been a leader in teaching economics for over 25 years. His passion for teaching economics has never diminished over those 25 years. His principal states that he continuously looks for new strategies, ideas and methods to engage and enlighten his students and provide them with the tools to be successful.

 

His leadership and dedication to teaching economics extends beyond his classroom and school. He is an in-service instructor for the Florida Council serving Palm Beach and Broward County through the Florida Atlantic University Center, he authored the latest curriculum guidelines in Economics for the Palm Beach County school system, and serves as a lesson plan and curriculum evaluator for the National Council on Economic Education.

 

He is the founder and creator of the very first on campus student led credit union in Palm Beach County. He embraces technology and in doing so, developed a website that is invaluable to his students. It is used as a research tool during the Stock Market Challenge, a place to post assignments and now has a blog to further students’ conversations about the economy.

 

Eligibility

The award is based on demonstrated leadership in financial literacy, free enterprise and economic education over a sustained period of time. An evidence of creativity and innovation in teaching these concepts should be clear.

Judging Criteria

  • Involvement with the FCEE and its programs
  • History of leadership in financial literacy, free enterprise and economic education at the local, state and national level
  • Participation in economic conferences / workshops
  • Creativity and student motivation
  • Leadership in education

Recognition

  • The winning teacher will be recognized at the Florida Council’s Governor’s Awards for Excellence in Teaching Economics program to be held May 2008.
  • The winner will receive cash and other significant awards.
  • Additionally, the recipient will be featured on the Florida Council’s website.
