30th Annual Event

The 30th Annual Governor’s Awards For Excellence in Teaching Economics…For more than 25 years, the Florida Council on Economic Education has recognized Florida educators for innovation and creativity in teaching economics, free enterprise and financial literacy. Open to K-12 educators in all 67 Florida school districts, the Governor’s Awards Program honors educators who have successfully taught these concepts by integrating them into everyday coursework.This prestigious event allows the business community to express their true appreciation for educators who work tirelessly to teach the values and principles or our free market economy to students throughout the state.The Florida Council on Economic Education is excited to offer this year’s Governor’s Awards at Sea World Orlando. In addition to the awards ceremony, all winners and their families will be given free access to the park for the full day. Apply today and we’ll see you there!! General Guidelines:

Copies of the application form are acceptable. The entire application process may be completed online including uploads of supporting documentation at http://www.fcee.org/. Hardcopy applications may also be submitted but must include a copy of application and supporting materials. An individual educator may submit projects for multiple categories. PROJECTS MUST BE TAUGHT IN CURRENT SCHOOL YEAR. Deadline for receipt of applications is Friday, April 10, 2009 by 5pm via online or postmarked to Florida Council on Economic Education, 1211 N. West Shore Blvd, Ste 305, Tampa, FL. 33607 Attn: GAP Awards.

This years’ Governor’s Awards are divided into various categories and multiple grade levels. We encourage the use of computer-based simulations, video games, using websites, creating websites, and web quests as a component of any project.

Project-based Awards

  • American/Global Economy - Examples may include lessons in our free enterprise system and/or in the area of the ever changing global economy and markets.
  • Micro-Societies/Virtual Economies - Examples may include classroom economies, school stores, school businesses and business clubs.
  • Entrepreneurship- Examples may include programs and units that help students launch small businesses.
  • Investing/Stock Market Challenge - Examples include outstanding group-based and individual projects/activities that incorporate the Stock Market Challenge in the classroom.
  • Financial Literacy - Examples may include innovative financial literacy, budgeting and career-based projects.
  • Student Business Plan - Awarded to a student or group that develops the best overall business plan.

Merit Award Categories

  • Special Education Economic Educator of the Year- K-12

  • Stock Market Challenge Advisor of the Year- Given to the teacher who not only has a high performing team in the Florida Stock Market Challenge, but who goes above and beyond in teaching the principles of investing.
  • Charles Harper Economic Educator of the Year
