For 35 years now, the Florida Council on Economic Education (FCEE) has recognized Florida’s most outstanding teachers for their creativity in presenting lessons in economics, personal finance and entrepreneurship. Open to all K-12 teachers, the Governor’s Awards for Excellence in Teaching Economics is a celebration of best practices and a way of acknowledging the innovation that teachers bring to the classroom.
At the Governor’s Awards, the FCEE will award best practices in five project based categories for elementary, middle and high school grade levels. The FCEE will also recognize one project applicant who is either a first year teacher or new to teaching economics as the Rookie of the Year, and an outstanding Stock Market Challenge educator for Stock Market Challenge Advisor of the Year. Project winners receive:
First Place winners for each age group in each of 5 categories: $500
Second Place winners for each age group in each of 5 categories: $200
Third Place winners for each age group in each of 5 categories: $50
As always, we will recognize one teacher as our Charles C. Harper Economic Educator of the Year. The Harper Award, which includes a $1,000 cash prize, goes to a teacher who has demonstrated leadership in financial literacy, free enterprise and economic education over a sustained period of time, with evidence of creativity and innovation in teaching these concepts at the local, state and national level.

Professional Development Workshops
This year, the FCEE is also proud to offer two professional development workshops led by top educators from Florida Atlantic University and the University of South Florida. Space will be limited so please be sure to indicate on your RSVP card which session you plan to attend. Attendees will have their choice between either of these fascinating topics:
- “The Business of Baseball”
The “Business of Baseball” workshop connects entrepreneurial thinking with engaging instructional activities. The workshop focuses on using video clips of numerous baseball movies as a way of demonstrating creative strategies for engaging K-12 students in looking at professional baseball as an entrepreneurial business enterprise. Video clips also used to illustrate key concepts such as work ethic, perseverance, team work, innovative thinking and business operation. A key aspect of the program is the integration of “Florida Standards (Common Core)” with the “baseball” content of the workshop. The workshop is appropriate for K-12 teachers and all who attend will receive DVDs of the video clips as well as lessons relevant to the topic.
- “Zoo Babies: New H.S. Economics Lessons Born at The Lowry Park Zoo”
